GE Vernova sinks 11% on Meta's AI spending scare, not its own news
Why is GE Vernova stock down today?
GE Vernova had no news of its own. It fell with other data-center power stocks after Meta's results showed AI spending outrunning the cash its business generated, raising doubts about how long big tech can keep paying for the build-out.

What happened
- GE Vernova, spun off from General Electric in 2024, makes gas and wind turbines and grid equipment. Investors have treated it as a major AI winner because data centers need huge amounts of power. Its order backlog is about $176 billion.
- It had no news of its own on Thursday, Oct 22: Investing.com reported that the drop was not triggered by any GE Vernova announcement. This was a sympathy move. Its next results are due Wednesday, Oct 28.
- The trigger was Meta. On Wednesday evening Meta reported that its AI capex exceeded the cash its business generated, raised the low end of its 2026 capex plan and created new shares it could sell to raise money. (Why Meta’s stock fell)
- GE Vernova opened at about $896 and slid all day to close at $827.42, down 10.6% from $925.92 (low about $815). About $26 billion in market value was erased.
- Data-center power stocks fell together: Vertiv about 8%, Vistra about 10%, Quanta Services about 8% and Eaton about 6%. The S&P 500 fell 1.2% and the Nasdaq 2.6%.
Why the market reacted this way
- The worry is funding. Big tech pays for AI data centers with cash from its core businesses, and Meta just showed that cash no longer covers the bill. Meta’s CFO said it has no “specific financing plans to announce at this time.” If funding gets harder, projects and the equipment orders behind them could slow.
- Meta is actually spending more, which helps suppliers like GE Vernova for now. The fear is about how long that can last.
- The stock was priced for a long boom: about 42 times expected earnings for the next 12 months before Thursday’s drop, per TIKR data reported by Yahoo Finance. At that valuation, small doubts move the price a lot.
- The worries had been building. GE Vernova fell about 11% in the week through Tuesday, including about 6% on Oct 14 after hot inflation data raised concerns about borrowing costs and AI financing. Brent crude near $112 a barrel added to fears of a slower data-center buildout, and JPMorgan and Susquehanna had recently cut their price targets.
- With results a week away, some big investors appeared to sell to lock in gains, according to Investing.com.
Does this change GE Vernova’s future?
What did NOT change
- Data centers are only part of demand. Utilities need more power for many reasons beyond AI.
What DID change
- Investors doubt how long the AI spending boom will last, and GE Vernova’s valuation assumed a long one. That makes the Oct 28 results, especially data-center orders, a bigger test.
Our read
Nothing in GE Vernova’s business changed on Oct 22; what investors will pay for future AI-driven orders did.
What to watch next
- Wed, Oct 28
- Third-quarter results, before the open. Are data-center orders still coming in, and is the backlog still growing? Analysts expect about $3.99 per share (MarketBeat).
- Oct 28–29
- Microsoft and Alphabet (Oct 28) and Amazon (Oct 29) report. Their data-center spending plans drive demand for GE Vernova's equipment.
- Coming months
- How Meta and other tech giants fund their AI build-out: cash, debt or new shares. Smooth financing would ease the worry; delayed projects would make it real.
