Free cash flow

The cash a company has left after paying for its day-to-day business and its capex. It's the money it could use to pay dividends, buy back shares or pay down debt.

Free cash flow = operating cash flow − capex.

If a company’s spending grows faster than the cash its business brings in, free cash flow shrinks, and it may need to borrow or sell new shares to keep going.

Also called: FCF.
